A Digital Twin consists in creating a high-fidelity virtual model for physical objects in a digital way to manage real-time and two-way mappings between physical objects and digital representation. It provides an effective solution for cyber-physical fusion, and therefore, to the previous industrial challenge described. In fact, Digital Twin is expected to be one of the top 10 strategic technology trends over the next five years.

The VIMS project is focused on the development of a Factory Digital Twin (shop floor) in order to enable a detailed visualization of the manufacturing process from single components up to the whole assembly. The Factory Digital Twin will be fed by the IIoT platform, designed to ingest massive volumes of machine sensor data as well as data from various enterprise systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) or Programme Logic Controllers (PLCs), among others, to manage and execute analytic models, to run a high speed business rules engine and to manage industrial data at scale.

Furthermore, this environment will be integrated with vertical business applications designed to allow plant executives, plant managers and workers to interact with the Digital Twin in real time. In this sense, and within this project, three vertical business applications, classified in two solution groups, will be implemented leveraging the core of the VIMS system to overcome the socio-economic barriers mentioned above. Once the project is finished, new business applications will be added on the VIMS system in order to accomplish a scalable and sustainable platform.

The VIMS will be able to provide a Factory Digital Twin (a sensorized virtual model of the factory) that will be visualized using user-friendly solutions for improving the monitoring and control of factories through intuitive dashboards and mobile applications, as well as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality user interfaces for supporting quality, maintenance and assembly tasks in a safety environment.

Over the IIoT platform and Digital Twin, three business applications will be developed to provide added value to manufacturing processes:

Virtual training.

Assisted operator.
